Emergency Recall: HOW TO

Under normal surroundings, you believe your dog has superior memory. He’s dependable off leash and walks without running off on his own, giving only a quick look at squirrels gliding over the neighbor’s lawn or the dog on the corner who runs to the edge of the electric fence line, barking and carrying on whenever you walk by. He follows the commands “stay,” “down” and “sit” with no pause.

But still the best disciplined dogs are dogs, and sooner or later the likelihood is high that there is going to be some motivation that overrides all the hard-earned obedience and faith in a split second and you’ll watch in horror as your best behaved best buddy hurtles himself toward an object that has his undivided interest neglectful of everything between himself and that object.

A hazard such as this is the reason that repetitive instruction is required.

The cornerstone of an emergency recall is to use one distinctive order, whether or not it is a single word or a phrase, that you in no way, ever employ for something else. It needs to be something your dog will not be likely to hear by chance called out at the dog park or that you or another family member utilizes in dialogue or any sort of play or interface with the dog. It has to be something that your dog is solely going to hear when he definitely, absolutely must come to you. One trainer I am familiar with employs the expression, “duckduck-goose.” It must be something memorable to you and other family members and instantaneously familiar to your dog. It is not going to succeed if, at the time you see your dog racing in the direction of a four lane highway, your brain freezes and you can not remember the precise terms. This one needs to be as hard wired into your mind as it is your dog’s.

The method my trainer friend taught me is simple and beautifully effective.

Reinforcement of this critical behavior response is comprised of three procedures: strict consistency, your dog’s most favorite reward and devotion of time. Only when he has reacted precisely to the recall instruction can you provide him his treat. That is the most complicated part.

Fill a pocket with the magic morsels and you are set to start. Commence by distancing yourself from the dog. Get his awareness (not including using your new crisis recall command or some other) and while he starts in the direction of you, call out the new command. To boost his behavior, maintain using the order as he arrives to you. When he gets to you, repeat the instruction whilst you furnish him one of his treats; spend a full 30 seconds continuing to encourage him with the goodies and replicate the order to him. Repeat three times.

Then replicate the procedure three times a day, in sets of three recalls, taking care to be extravagant with the morsels and repetition of the crisis recall instruction. For a minimum of two weeks, repeat this procedure every day, at the same time as increasing the distance and increasing disruptions. Don’t add too many disruptions too quickly; you do not want to have to begin again with a unique verbal order!

As you develop a connection between the goodies, behavior and command, have other family members participate in the process.

At the time you are getting perfect recall, without uncertainty, even with disruptions, begin extending the training sessions. You can start to steadily decrease the classes to a weekly routine, being sure to receive three faultless recalls each session. If you do not get those recalls, return to the first drill until you are back to where you need to be.

Apartment Hunting

Since I recently moved, I know it is hard to take your dogs to a new apartment. Hell, It’s tough enough finding the right apartment in the right location at the right price that will accommodate you and your family.  Things get much more complicated when you have a dog.  Not all landlords or tenant associations allow dogs.  In buildings where dogs are allowed, there are often regulations on the breed or size of the dog.  When looking for the right place for your family and your dogs you need a bit of extra patience and resourcefulness.

Restrictions

When looking for a place to live where you will be allowed to keep your dog, the first thing you need to remember is that when speaking to your prospective landlord or building administrator, the first thing you need to ask is if the building in question has a no dogs policy. There is no point to any further discussion if a no dogs policy in place.  If dogs and pets are allowed, you need to learn what sort of dogs or cats will be considered acceptable.  Some buildings will permit only smaller breeds, if your dog is rather loud and high strung, you may also have a problem.

Logistics

Apart from the logistical concerns of your family, you’ll also need to consider the requirements of your dog.  You apartment should be near a dog park, or at the very least a place where it is safe to take your dog on long regular walks.

Reading Your Contract

Because apartments that allow dogs often do impose restrictions, you will need to be wary of any fine print on your lease contract connected to owning pets.  Some landlords will require an additional damage deposit when pets are involved.  You may also be required to hire a professional cleaning service before vacating the premises.

Many lease contracts and tenant associations have restrictions against dogs that bark excessively, if yours is such a dog, you may have some major headaches down the road.  In many apartments, such a problem is often grounds for eviction.  The bottom line is read your contract thoroughly so that you’ll be prepared for any unpleasant eventualities.

Maintaining the Apartment

Anytime you rent something that is not yours, bear in mind that the owner takes a big risk and places a lot of faith in you.  If you are given the privilege of keeping a dog in an apartment building, don’t take the privilege lightly.  Pick up after your dog, avoid scenarios where your dog can damage the apartment, and make necessary repairs when your dog does.  Don’t give any of your fellow tenants reasons to complain about your dog.  If you can demonstrate that a dog can be kept in an apartment with minimal fuss, and inconvenience, it is good for dog owners everywhere who might be on the hunt for apartments. Make sure you give your dog its space and put your a dog crate during the day to minimize noise or confusion.

Dog Food

I am pretty into the organic movement and subsequently, my dogs also eat pretty good. Plus, that stuff in the grocery store totally grosses me out! You won’t find me buying froofy dog clothes or buying guilded dog beds soon…but the dogs got to eat. I found a good guide about the chemicals that are commonly found in dog food. Not quite sure of the source but looks to be pretty on point. Cheers!

Choosing Dog Food For Your Dog

Just as the FDA calls for nutrition labeling for food consumed by humans, there is now values for puppy and dog nutrition listed on pet food labels. The Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) is the group that made these rules. Reading your pet food label will give you information concerning the amount of fat, protein, and carbohydrates the food has.   Not only should you merely read the label, you should determine the best ingredients and type of food for your dog.  Chemical preservatives and fillers such as soy, corn, and wheat should be averted. If your dog is a finicky eater, find out which dog food corporations offer samples or money back guarantees, to ensure that you can purchase several varieties and your dog can try the food before you decide on one.

To help you better recognize the contents listed on the dog food labels, here is some extra facts regarding a few of the ordinary contents.

Meat: Meat is the clean flesh of slaughtered animals (chicken, cattle, lamb, turkey, etc.). The flesh can include striated very thin muscle, tongue, diaphragm, heart, esophagus, overlying fat and the epidermis, tendon, nerves and blood vessels normally found with that flesh.

Meat By-products: Meat by-products are unsoiled pieces of slaughtered animals, not including meat. These comprise lungs, spleen, kidneys, brain, liver, blood, bone, and stomach and intestines freed of their contents. It does not contain hair, horns, teeth, or hooves.

Poultry By-products: Poultry by-products are clean parts of slaughtered poultry including heads, feet, and internal organs (such as heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, abdomen, and intestines). It does not contain feathers.

The minced tissue of whole fish or fish cuttings, with or with no the oil extracted, is referred to as fish meal.

Corn Gluten Meal: Corn gluten meal is the by-product after the manufacture of corn syrup or starch, and is the dried remains following the removal of the bran, germ, and starch. ( I stay far away from this stuff, ConAgra)

The small fragments of rice kernels that came from the separated bigger kernels of milled rice are called Brewers Rice.

Butylated hydroxyanisole is a fat preservative commonly seen on lables as BHA.

A chemical additive used in dog food to prevent spoilage is ethoxyquin.

Vitamin E, also called Tocopherols, are natural compounds used as ordinary preservatives.

Instead of choosing one dog food make and sticking with it forever,  experts are recommending that you change your dogs diet every two to six months.  You could either stick with the equivalent brand of food or just change the formula or you could switch brands.   You should be able to get high-quality recommendations from your veterinarian about the best alternatives for you your dog.  For persons who feed their dogs using home-based food (not table scraps), it’s recommended that you use a variety of foods since not only is the identical food all of the time pretty boring, but it can lead to food allergies or other health issues.

The decision is ultimately up to you, but it is recommended that you not only talk to your vet, but additionally obtain breeders recommendation.  Dog food choices aren’t very complicated since there’s only wet or dry varieties of food.

Surely, price is a factor in which dog food you choose to get.  Dry food is generally more economical, with the lower price per pound per the bigger pound bags.  As an example, a 50-pound bag is less than half as much per pound than an equivalent 5-pound bag.

Prior to switching your dog over to a totally different food, work it in gradually by adding some of the new food to the old food for a week roughly.  Examine your dog’s manners, energy, and coat for a number of weeks subsequent to switching to a new food to watch for signs of any changes in appearance.

Things You Probably Don’t Care About…

I hate it when some chooses a terrible restaurant for their birthday. As I get older, my money and time is and precious. Last tuesday, it is a friends birthday and unexpectedly I find myself venturing out to celebrate. Of course, the first chain restaurant chosen was packed (the one that actually has a great, over priced beer selection and decent food), over a 50 minute wait. Next place we go is the scummiest bar, or at least among them…and not really because of the cleanliness, but more for the clientele. This is where we chose to eat. They are also slammed…fast forward to midnight, I’m tired, sluggish from investing a platter of fried {insert random food item}, and $20 poorer. What up with that!
